Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology
The Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology is an AQF Level 8 post graduate qualification which may be taken as a ‘stand-alone’ ‘single’ qualification, leading to the award of ‘Graduate Certificate of Cosmetic Dermatology. This course is a ‘nested’ component within the Full Master of Cosmetic Dermatology Program. To view the overall course outline click here
The other components of this ‘nested’ program include the Graduate Diploma in Cosmetic Dermatology (which cannot be attempted until the Graduate Certificate has been successfully completed) and the Masters ‘Capstone’ component comprised of advanced studies in research methodology and the completion of a Minor Research Project (12 – 15,000 word Mini Thesis).
Students who complete all three components of the Full Master of Cosmetic Dermatology Program will be awarded the qualification, ‘Master of Cosmetic Dermatology’ by the College.
Note that students who do not wish to complete the other courses that comprise the Full Master of Cosmetic Dermatology Program may elect to exit the program with the award of Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology.
The Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology is comprised of 4 compulsory core subjects and a pre/co-requisite basic research subject dealing with Basic Issues in Evidence based Medicine (RMI):
- I: An Introduction
- II: The Cosmetic Consultation
- III: Surface Active Procedures
- IV: Injectables
These compulsory core subjects must be completed fully and successfully to be granted the qualification ‘Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology’.
The course has a theoretical base, covering a range of key areas which may be considered ‘foundational’ to further advancement in the development of knowledge and skills in the field of cosmetic dermatological practice. It will focus on principles, concepts and theory that underpin the sub-domain of dermatological practice that is cosmetic dermatology.
The ACD considers post-graduate students should be required to apply their study to problems, issues or other matters of substance which produce significant benefits in their professional practice and that of others. To this end the Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology, developed by the ACD, is designed to encompass and provide opportunity for students to learn in environments that nurture the: scholarship of discovery; scholarship of integration; and scholarship of application.
TEACHING STRATEGIES
The teaching strategies adopted in the Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology program will reflect the nature of the subject being ‘taught’.
Teaching in the Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology program and its component subjects will take the following forms:
- Virtual F2F scheduled teaching/tutorial/student interaction sessions using online synchronous webinar technologies.
- Online open discussion spaces (synchronous/asynchronous)
- Independent online learning/activity within the supporting online content modules
- Live teaching/tutorial scheduled sessions and combined assessment of clinical knowledge and skills (where appropriate)
- Independent/Self Directed Problem Based Learning
The form and weighting of assessments may vary from subject to subject and from time to time. In general however, the assessment of performance in both the component subjects and the Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology as a whole is as follows:
ASSESSMENT
The Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology program will consist of a:
- Coursework component
- Other as appropriate
The component subjects shall have the following internal assessment weightings where appropriate:
- Online, invigilated MCQ examinations (not more than 60%)
- Written submissions (not more than 60%).
- Contribution to virtual classroom and/or online discussion sessions (not more than 10%)

This course is a blended course involving virtual webinars and tutorials and has a pre-requisite component. Before you enrol in this course, it is necessary to have completed or be in the process of completing Research Methods 1 on the ACD e-portal.

Co requisites:
CLOC 1: Demonstrate the development of an appropriate knowledge base in the field of Cosmetic Dermatology.
CLOC 2: Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the cosmetic consultation, patient selection and rights.
CLOC 3: Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the treatment options available to the cosmetic patient.
CLOC 4: Utilise an evidence based approach to analysis of patient needs.
CLOC 5: Formulate cosmetic treatment plans by synthesizing a detailed knowledge of facial anatomy and a comparison of treatment modalities.
CLOC 6: Distinguish between cosmetic treatments by assessing their probable outcomes against potential risks.
CLOC 7: Critically appraise current practice and/or research in the domain of cosmetic dermatology and its various sub-domains
Enrolment is open only to persons who meet the criteria set out below:
- A bachelor degree in medicine or its equivalent
- Registration to practice medicine within Australia
- Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD)
- Full Time Students
- Minimum completion time 0.5 years (1 semester)
- ‘Expected Average’ completion time 0.5 years (1 semester)
- Maximum completion time 1.0 year (2 semesters)
- Part Time Students
- Minimum completion time 1 year (2 semesters)
- Maximum completion time 2.0 years (4 semesters)
*Timings based on no periods of leave and timing of course/subject offerings.
Each of the core subjects attract a fee of $1,500. The Basic Research Methods subject RM I: Evidence Based Medicine also attracts a fee of $1,500.
For a student who has completed the Research Methods subject RM I prior to enrolment, the full course fee for the Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Dermatology will be $6,000. Students who must take the subject RM I as a co-requisite will have a full course fee of $7,500. Students may pay full fees upfront or elect to pay monthly for each enrolled subject until full payment is reached.
